Queen of Jerusalem

Queen of Jerusalem

 Israel 2009

75 minutes

"When I was a child, I thought my mother was a queen. She had a radiant smile and a cold, commanding gaze that people told me belonged to a queen. At night, before sleep, she would bounce me on her knees and sing to me 'Hoppe Hoppe Reiter,' a cruel and ancient German children's song." Professor Trude Dothan, 85, is the first lady of Israeli archaeology. She is an Israel Prize laureate and an international expert on the Philistines. Trude is also the mother of Dani Dothan, a "bad boy," musician, writer, and filmmaker who decides it's time to embark on an "archaeological" dig into his mother's life. Dani begins documenting Trude's energetic world through excavations and professorial gatherings, but then she falls, breaks her hip, and finds herself, for the first time in her life, confined to a bed. Strangely, this is the miracle that Dani had been waiting for. He returns home, opens drawers, and closets, and finds "discoveries" that reveal his mother's hidden life. Trude Dothan is the guardian of the family history obsessively cataloging objects, paintings, death masks, and even letters she wrote to him as a child. Dani discovers a magical, funny, and sad world he never really knew.

"Queen of Jerusalem" is a documentary drama in which the characters are a house full of secrets, a man with scars from childhood, and a mother fighting for her right to live forever, to be a young and victorious queen, even in an aging body.
