Ofra

Israel 2020

180 minutes - A three-part series

An in-depth investigation, through friends, family, never-before-spoken witnesses, and rare archives, tells the full story of Ofra Haza, from the day she was born to a large family in the impoverished Hatikva neighborhood, until her death at the age of forty-two from AIDS. What hides behind the mask of Ofra's extraordinary smile? She left home at the age of fourteen to conquer the world. Ofra was talented, beautiful, and ambitious. What was the price she paid? How did she succeed in conquering Europe with a song hundreds of years old, and what caused her downfall? The series delves into the historical depth of twenty years, during which Israeli culture transformed and Ofra emerges as a female icon of that same transformation, the transitions between East and West and back to the East. The transition from a poor girl to an Israeli superstar, from the song "Shir Hafrecha" (the Bimbo Song) that exposed her to Israeli identity politics, to becoming a national singer at the Nobel Prize ceremony for Rabin, Arafat, and Peres, to international fame where Ofra combines the Eastern and Western influences in a way that had never been heard before. Her professional success and her songs are interwoven in the story of her private life, revealing a desperate longing for connection, endless loneliness, and complex relationships with her manager who took her into his home at the age of 14. At the age of forty, it seemed that Ofra had found peace for her tormented soul, she meets the true love of her life, only to discover that she is sick with AIDS. The concealment of her medical condition for two years and her eternal smile were the backdrop to her premature death from the disease.
